The Cunard liners Mauretania and her sister Lusitania became
both famous, since both ships were saling completely on steamturbine. In the
beginning both ships won the Blue Ribbon in turn. Unfortunately when she
was 8 years old, the Lusitania was torpedoed in 1915 with U20 and 1198 people
on board. Mauretania continued with an impressive career with 7800 s.h.p. and a
service speed of 25 knots. A few short moment the German liner Bremen broke her
record but after one month she took it back ! Her maximum speed became 27,22
knots. At the end of her lifetime she was painted white as a cruise ship (1930)
and broken up in Rosyth in 1935.
