SHIP ISRAEL - SHIP ANGRA DO HEROÍSMO

Dear Friends and Customers,
now we are almost on our way...
The "Funchal" will wait for us on Thursdaymorning in Lisbon and I cannot tell you, how much I look forward to see her - to sail with her finally.
And such a long journey it is, too.

But: I want to use the long time of absence to pro-announce our new creations so that you have some time to decide in case of interest and
inform your dealors so that we know when we come back how many models of each version are wanted.

The "Israel" was the first purpose build passenger ship for Israel, when delivered by "Deutsche Werft" in 1955 and
the first of thirty five new ships that were built between 1954 and 1961 in West Germany following the Reparation Payments Agreement
(Compensation for stolen property taken from Jews by the Nazis and the cost of resettlements in Israel).
She was as well the first ship to be completed for Zim. They were built to operate the Trans-Atlantic service, sailing from Haifa, Piraeus, Naples, Gibraltar, Funchal to New York.
Another main purpose was to bring Jews back to their ancient homeland.
As the shipyard was known for many beautiful reefer-ships I believe, that the curved design of these two beauties was an adaption from a Reefer.
They looked extremely seaworthy and had a strong sheer.
1966 she was sold to Empresa Insulana de Navegacao/ Portugal to become their "Angra do Herosimo".
She served mainly in the service to the Azores and Madeira until 1974, when she was scrapped.

A bonus on this model is the scaffold for the sun-sheets that I simply had to add, as there is such a nice picture in a old brochure, which I include here.
Aside - the inside of the ships was simply overwhelming and reminds me to the style of the shakers - in particular in the cabin design.
The "Israel's" sister "Zion" was sold to another company in Portugal and became the "Amelia de Mello" which I cannot create from this mould, as the windows in her front were different.
So this ship will appear within the next years.
The main dimensions were:
Tonnage: 9853 gross tons
Dimensions:  152,70 m Länge
                        18,81 m Breite
                        9,50 m Tiefgang (!)
Engines: Steam D. R. geared turbines action on a single screw.
Service Speed: 17,5 knots
Passengers:  323 in first and tourist class
We will offer these versions:
Ri 255 "Israel" for 115,00 Euro

Dear Friends and Customers
already before we have started our cruise on the MV "Azores" I had bougth a CM-KR "Athena" and made a complete overhaul, including stripping of the color and giving the hull a sharper shape.
Now CM has produced that model in - as it looks to me - an improved version as "Azores".
As today we have delivered our new models "Vera Cruz" and "Alta" to our dealors and some customers have already asked me, if I could fully paint this model for them, I would like ot offer this to you:
We could
a) give the CM-KR models as delivered a full deckpainting (the colours on my own model attached are not yet completely right - the upper decks are light brown now and the liveboats are yellow). The original paintwork from CM would remain untouched. The cost of the purchase of the model is 55,00 Euro (f. e. via Mr. Wiedling, as CM does not sell unpainted castings) and I would ask for 25,00 Euro for the rest of the painting, that needs to be done. Of course You are as well invited to send me a model You have already purchesed. In this case please make sure, that you have a perfect packing.
Alternativly I could offer
b) to stripe off all original CM color, remove the colorframes, that are build in this model Then I would spray the model white and do a full repaint.
For that I would charge 55,00 Euro in addition to the cost of the model.
In both cases the shipment will come in addition, althought I guess, the model could then be delivered via Mr. Wiedling.

In case you are interested in one of the two offers, please send us a mail as soon as possible - the later castings will not be as good as the first ones.

Kind regards from München

Malheureusement, le show a tourné court.

SHIP FUNCHAL - PHOTO GALLERY

Dear Friends and Customers,
Some sleepless nights have given me the chance to create another web-gallery, this time with the pictures of a three-hour visit on my beloved Portuguese passenger ship Funchal.
You can find pictures of her on
www.risawoleska.de/funchal

Unfortunately, I have no idea how to integrate text into this gallery. Therefore, here are some impressions and notes.
The ship is now owned by the newly-formed Portuguese "Portuscale Cruises", who seemingly understand that an old ship today is of some value for all real-ship-lovers.
But the first impression is a negative one, as the fantastic Danish styled reception disappeared  as well as the beautiful spiral staircase close to it today being, for “security reasons”, walled in and wall-papered in a horrible fashion.
The same goes for the carpet and this fine old ship has now lost a lot of its character.
The interior was definitely not one of the most striking points of the Funchal in more recent times.
So the question must be asked, are some of the newly-designed rooms really a step backwards?
Such as of the debatable "Safari Bar", the forward lounge.
The dining room in contrast is dominated by Bordeaux-red and although being very light, it feels extremely cosy.
I found the new corridors very stylish.
Some of the old artwork is still in place, but most impressive is the fact that new pieces have been added - and not only that - they theme the ship itself in a fashion that bears a lot of likeness to Portugal, consisting of tiles as they do.
The best feature today is that the outer deck-spaces have been largely renovated and improved.
Although her original silhouette has only been spoiled a little, the passengers gain a lot more comfort and space on the open deck at the stern of the ship.
Even some more spiral-staircases have been installed framing the area there and creating a hint of a Sagafjord amphitheatre.
The Funchal has an open promenade on each side of the ship that are, as all essential decks should be, properly planked with freshly sanded wood.
The handrails are freshly sanded and covered with high-gloss varnish as well, the obvious sign of good maintenance.
I was moved to see that the old brass window frames at the forward part of the superstructure were sanded and varnished as well, in a most careful way.
The upper parts of the superstructure have not yet been properly renovated, so the funnel and the masts still appear to have rust that has been painted over, but I am sure that the crew will soon improve that to suit the general high level of overhaul.
The re-introduction of the old colour-scheme is something to die for!!
Even the addition of the scrolled P on the funnel, for some spectators felt to be elegant, for others absurd, does not really spoil the classic look of the ship now with its dark hull with  white-red boot-topping.
By the way, the black of the hull is a very, very dark blue.
We were only given few hours on the Funchal and that was by coincidence.
I was so pleasantly surprised by this opportunity that I forgot to take pictures of the reception or to ask for access to some cabins.
I had no tripod with me, either, and the strong midday sun was fine for outside pictures, but inside, it spoiled the result with its harsh contrasts in light quality.
I think that the Funchal is the most beautiful active cruise ship, something I have felt since I first saw her in 1988.
For travellers like me, who want to be sure that the most beautiful ship in port is the one to return to after an excursion, she is the only choice for sure!
The interior is, in my view, somewhat lacking in theme, very often not understandable and it  consists of some strengths and weaknesses which do not evoke an emotion worthy of the beauty and uniqueness of the vessel.
Therefore, on a cold grey day in the North Atlantic, it might be more attractive to be inside her running mate Azores. In the southern sun, Funchal’s open decks and sheltered promenades must be a real pleasure.
Finally, I am sure that her new owners do not think that the process of improving this fine and unique ship is complete.
But more important, the commercial success of the Funchal will be a criterion that can only be guaranteed in one way, by booking a trip on this outstanding ship created in the shadow of the Hamlet-castle on the north of Zealand in 1961, a ship that has never changed its name.
Kind regards

Burkhard Schütt

SANTA MARIA E VERA CRUZ, DE NOVO A NAVEGAR

Dear Friends and Customers,
we are back from a very nice voyage to Lisbon and a cruise from there on the Portuscale Cruises "Azores" - better known as "Stockholm" from 1948.
We started work on our these days projects right ahead and will soon be able to deliver the tiny little "Alta" from the Norwegian FFR and the Portuguese beauty "Vera Cruz".
Both ships have a lot in common; both are sisterships to ships we have had produced earlier and both differed a lot to their sister.
In case of the Ri 127 "Alta" the main superstruckture was very different and as well a wooden planked bridge-bulwark made her appear different and somehow more old-fashioned then her sister "Sørøy".
The "Vera Cruz" had (aside minor equipment-diffences in the details ondeck) a different front to the "Santa Maria" and looked - in my opinion- more sleek and elegant, but less characteristic than her sister "Santa Maria"
We do not yet have model pictures of the "Alta" but please have a look at the pictures of the pre-series of the "Vera Cruz", that I have attached.
Bothe models will apear in only one version - as build.
The selling price for the "Vera Cruz" will be roughly 120,00 Euro, the price for the "Alta" will be around 35,00 Euro.
The production of the "Vera Cruz" was almost driving me mad and this is the reason, why the total amount of models is low - I ruined so many repair parts that at least only a small number of models could be created.
All in all the effort to produce these was very much like the one for the "Oslofjord" - aside that the cargo-handling on "Vera Cruz" was less work.
However, please let Your dealors know soon, in case You want to order.

Another bad news is, that I have to postpone the production of the probably most wanted of our models - the "New Zealand Star" of the Blue Star Line - perhaps to eternity as I seem to be unable to produce that fine ship and master.
I have not yet given up totally, but I am most frustrated with a second mould not working, too.

However, if You are interested in pictures of the old "Stockholm" in Portuguese hands as "Azores" you may use this hidden link to my website and watch my pictures there:

www.risawoleska.de/azores The german cruise operator can be found here:
http://www.ambiente-kreuzfahrten.de/ This is the Portuguese Owner Portuscale Cruises:
who ons as well my alltime favorite "Funchal" as well as the old "Istra"
(now "Porto") and the "Lisboa" - formerly "Princess Danae". They realy seem to try with the beauty of old ships - a bold enterprise and and as I think very worth supporting.
The best for me on our trip - aside the companionship of my wife of course - was a visit on board of the "Funchal", from where I soon hope to be able to realize another web-album.
Seemingly a book about this best vessel still afloat was made by the owners, that I soon shall find.
Perhaps I can manage to order more copies in case, somebody is interested.
The book is said to be bi-lingual in English as well.
I do not yet have a price for it.

All the best from a sunny and over-blossomed München

Burkhard Schütt
